What are categories and how to create them?

Categories help you to organize your products and make it easier for customers to reach what they are looking for more quickly. Category pages serve as an index of all the products that belong in a particular subject.

In an online store, categories can be: clothing, shoes, accessories etc. And subcategories can be clothing: women, men, children; shoes: heels, wedges, flatsetc.

Creating a category

Choose “Product Management” and “Categories”



From “Categories”, choose “Add Category"



Enter "Category Details" as Category Name and etc.

Category Name - category name you want your customers to see.

Category parent - if you want to create a subcategory you can choose which category it is related too.

Category description - Description of the category. Description fields helps customers find you through search engines

Category image - you can add picture in certain themes, but you can add a category without it. You can add images from your computer.

Click "Add Category"

Choose Categories from menu to see your created category.

How to add a product to category?

Choose "Products" from "Product Management"
Click on a product you want to add to a category
Under product description choose a category you want to add the product.



Click "Save"

On Products list you now can see under the product name the category where it is added.

How to create a subcategory?

Choose "Product Management"and "Categories"
Click "Add Category" at upper right corner

Under "Category Parent" choose which category you want your new category to relate



Choose categories again to see your new category in list. You can see which category the subcategory is related to. Shown shifted under the upper category.

How to edit a category?

Choose “Product Management” and “Categories”
Click on a Category name you want to change or settings mark after the category





Make necessary changes in Category details
Click “Save changes”

How to delete a category?

Choose “Product Management” and “Categories”
Click on a "Category" name you want to change or settings mark after the category
Click “Delete”on left under corner

How to make categories visible to clients?

If you have created categories then automatically they don’t appear on your webpage. You need to make them visible to clients so they can make finding products easier.

You can make categories visible by adding them to your main menu or making adding them as a submenu.

Making “Categories” section visible in main menu (in header or footer).

Choose "Navigation" → "Menus"



Choose "Header" or "Footer" (where do you like to show your categories) and click "Edit". Usually categories are shown in Header.



Choose "New Link" (upper right corner) to add a new menu element as "Categories":

Enter your Link details

Link Name - as you want to do be shown for your clients

Link Handle - to specify the link name

Link Parent - if you want to make page as a submenu. Like products:clothing.

Link Type - what page you want to refer to

Entity name - which entity you want to show to clients.



Click "Add Link"

The new menu will automatically appear on your header menu at homepage.

Making a category as a submenu

Choose "Navigation" → "Menus"
Choose "Header" or "Footer" (where do you like to show your categories) and click Edit. Usually categories are shown in "Header".
Choose "New Link" (upper right corner) to add a new menu element as "Categories"
Enter your Link details
Choose what page you want make submenu to




Add Link (or Save if you want change already existing link).

You now will see Category as a submenu on your homepage.



In Admin view submenu will be shown on "Menus" → "Header" like this:
